Sono due baldi giovanotti( e qui tralasciamo il solito cliché delle bellezze nordiche-a mio avviso comunque sempre attuale),ma soprattutto due amici che hanno un denominatore comune:fare bella musica ed emergere nel music business.E direi che l'obiettivo è stato centrato alla grande!
Bjorn e Thomas,alias ANIMAN,hanno da poco pubblicato un cd fantastico,fatto di un hard rock-metal accattivante,fresco e moderno;si intitola The Unholy,e ha già catturato l'attenzione di parecchi fans.Chapeau ragazzi!

Ciao ragazzi!Prima domanda:parlatemi un po' di voi.Come avete iniziato a fare musica?
CIAO!Ti faccio un breve sommario.Io(Bjorn) facevo già parte di una band,i Backwater,mentre Thomas era il frontman di un gruppo chiamato Pillowman,nella nostra stessa città.Nel mio gruppo(ai tempi un trio)mancava qualcosa,ci sentivamo incompleti;cosi' ci è venuto in mente che Thomas potesse essere l'elemento giusto per noi e lo abbiamo chiamato.Ed è stata la decisione giusta!Correva l'anno 2007 ed era il primo abbozzo degli ANIMAN ...
Il vostro album di debutto, The Unholy, è uscito da poco più di un mese.Come lo descrivereste?Che tipo di feeling ed emozioni volevate comunicare?
Quando penso all'album,la prima parola che mi viene in mente è Powerful(possente-forte).Penso che sia i suoni che le voci siano ricchi di forza,di carica,di energia.Sia io che Thomas scriviamo di quelle cose della vita con cui è difficile fare i conti.E se consideri la musica come una sorta di terapia,beh,hai già la risposta.Non si va dallo psichiatra a parlare delle gioie e delle delizie dell'esistenza...
Ho letto nella vostra biografia che provenite da due differenti background musicali.Nonostante le diversità,avete raggiunto "the perfect match".Qual è il vostro segreto?

Onestamente non ci sono tutte queste differenze.Thomas è un pochino più grande di me,così se lui era intento a scoprire sonorità a metà degli anni 80,io l'ho fatto dopo,nei primi anni 90.Anche se non siamo bloccati nelle nostre "epoche",sono convinto che i primi suoni,le prime musiche con cui hai a che fare ti seguiranno per tutta la vita.
Per semplificare,io sono il tipo "grunge",Thomas è più "hard rock".Ma amiamo tutti i tipi di musica,compreso il metal e il rock alternativo.
Come avviene il processo creativo degli ANIMAN?Come nasce un vostro pezzo:prima componete la musica e poi aggiungete i testi,o viceversa?
Il processo cambia da canzone a canzone. Il piu' delle volte io e Thomas abbiamo una canzone quasi completa che decidiamo di terminare insieme-Ma dipende.Ogni tanto uno di noi ha pronta la musica e l'altro mette le parole,etc etc
Per noi la musica è la parte più importante e quella che ci viene più facilmente.Le idee per nuove canzoni ci arrivano velocemente;i testi sono più complicati,ci occorre più tempo e ispirazione.
La vostra filosofia è:"alcune cose nella vita sono troppo belle per rinunciarvi e lasciarle andare via"Spiegatemi meglio questo concetto!
Per parecchi anni siamo stati occupati con la nostra altra band Orchid e con le cose della vita in generale,ma dentro la nostra testa sapevamo di avere canzoni belle,forti,potenti(alcune più o meno già terminate,altre solamente abbozzate)che non aspettavano altro che il momento giusto per uscire!
Ovviamente avremmo potuto ignorare questi input e continuare con la nostra solita vita,ma erano DECISAMENTE TROPPO BELLE PER IGNORARLE E LASCIARLE ANDARE,ecco,questa è la spiegazione!
Quali artisti e musicisti influenzano il vostro sound?E quale musica ascoltate di solito?
Come ho già detto prima,ascoltiamo quasi tutto(soprattutto con un certo riff di chitarra);direi quindi che andiamo dall'hard rock e metal degli anni 70 alla musica contemporanea.
Non trovo interessante ascoltare band che hanno un sound simile al nostro;è più stimolante trovare suoni diversi,nuovi,che non pensi di fare...Mi vengono in mente i Tool,i Mastodon,Meshuggah,TesseracT etc.Cerchiamo di non copiare nessuno,ma ovviamente siamo influenzati da questi gruppi e da molti altri.
Venite dalla Svezia.Com'è la scena musicale svedese?Ci sono opportunità per i giovani artisti di emergere senza passare da talent e reality show vari?
Da parecchi anni in Svezia si produce un ottimo e solido metal e hard rock,anche se devo ammettere che il fermento sta scemando da due anni a questa parte.Tra i grandi nomi non posso non citare Soilwork,In Flames,Raised Fist e Meshuggah-musica forte che va ancora alla grande!
Certamente il nostro maggiore "export"musicale deriva dagli autori svedesi di musica pop che riempiono le classifiche con le loro hit.
E' difficile non pensare al grande Max Martin(produttore,compositore e manager-ndt) quando si parla della Svezia e della sua musica.
Ma per rispondere alla tua domanda,non saprei dirti come stiano andando le cose a livello musicale;non sono molto bravo ad individuare "the next big thing,e sinceramente,non mi interessa granché,voglio pensare solo alla musica degli ANIMAN!
Per quanto riguarda i giovani artisti ci sono più modi per emergere di quanto si pensi.
Molti dei partecipanti dei talent show non vanno molto lontano,visto che sembra che stiano sotto i riflettori "l'espace d'un matin"(ossia fino alla stagione successiva dello show)
Non credo che qualcuno sappia esattamente cosa fare al momento per avere successo.Non ci sono vie facili per emergere,ma in effetti,ce ne sono mai state?
Penso solo che la situazione sia diversa.Il mondo della musica è in continua evoluzione(come qualunque altro business)e questo molte persone non lo capiscono.Se la gente non compra più i cd,non possiamo forzarli a farlo:dobbiamo invece pensare a modi alternativi per campare della nostra musica.
Ci sono molti modi per farsi notare,è difficile per tutti ma non impossibile.Occorre solo pensare a nuove "sfumature"....
Ultima domanda:progetti per il futuro degli ANIMAN!
Al momento cerchiamo di fare più show possibili!E,ovviamente,stiamo lavorando a nuovi pezzi,anche se non è la nostra priorità attualmente.

Hi guys!First of all,i would like to know a little more about you. When did you start playing
together as a band?
Hi!
Alright, here's a quick summary. I (Björn) was already in a band called Backwater, while Thomas
was the frontman of band called Pillowman from the same town. My band (a trio at the moment)
didn't feel complete, so to speak – something was missing. We thought that perhaps Thomas was
the missing link and gave him a call - it turned out we were absolutely correct! This was in 2007
and was what became Animan later on.
Your debut album "The Unholy" is out since October. How would you describe it? What
kinda feelings and emotions would you like to convey?
Powerful is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of it. The sound and vocals are
loaded with power in my opinion. I guess both Thomas and I always write music about the things in
life that are hard to cope with. If you consider music as a form of therapy you have the answer right
there. You don't see a psychiatrist to talk about easy and joyful things.
I read in you bio that you have two different musical backgrounds.Let's talk about it.Despite
the differences you reached the perfect match.What's your secret?Perfect match? Thanks!
To be honest it's not that big of a difference. Thomas is a bit older than I am, so while he discovered
music in the mid eighties, I did it in the early nineties. Although we're absolutely not stuck in our
eras in anyway, I think that whatever opens your ears to music to begin with, is gonna follow you
for the rest of your life.
So to simplify things, one can say that I'm more of a “grunge guy” and Thomas is more of a “hard
rock guy”. But we are both very much into all kinds of music, not least alternative rock and metal.
What about your creative method?How do you compose your songs?All of you are involved in
the process? Melody first and then come the lyrics or viceversa?
It differs from song to song. Most of the time, Thomas or I have an almost complete song and we
finish it up together – but it depends. Sometimes one of us has the music while the other creates
vocal parts and lyrics etc.
To us, the music is always number one and the part that comes easy. We can come up with ideas for
songs really quickly. The lyrics are way harder and require more inspiration and time to complete.
Your philosophy is :"some things in life are just too good to give up and let go".Try to explain
this statement!
Well, for many years we were busy with our other band Orchid and life in general, but in the back
of our heads we knew that we had some really good, heavy and powerful songs (some of them
already more or less completed, some others just ideas) that were just waiting to get out there!
Of course we could have just ignored it and continued with everything as usual but it was just too
good to give up and let go, simple as that!
Which artists/musicians influenced your sound?What kind of music do you usually listen to?
As I mentioned before, we listen to almost everything, most of it includes a guitar of some sort but
thats no guarantee either. So it's basically all types of rock and metal from the seventies 'til the
modern bands we hear today. At the moment I don't think either of is listening so much to bands
that are similar to Animan. To us it's way more interesting and exciting to listen to bands and artists
that do something different - things that you can't manage to create yourself. I'm thinking of bands
like Tool, Mastodon, Meshuggah, TesseracT etc. We don't try to copy anyone, but of course we are
influenced by the mentioned bands and many others.
You come from Sweden.I’m curious about the swedish music scene. How things are doing
over there? Are there any chances for young artists to reach success without taking part in
realities/talent show?
For many years Sweden has been really good at solid and well sounding metal and rock, even
though it's faded a little the last couple of years I think. But how about Soilwork, In Flames, Raised
Fist and Meshuggah for instance – great stuff and still going strong!
Of course our biggest export in music are the Swedish pop song writers thats filling up the charts.
It's hard not to think of the brilliant Max Martin when you think about Sweden and music.
But to answer the question, I really don't know how things or doing since I'm pretty lousy at
catching up on whats the “next big thing”. And frankly I'm not that interested since we in Animan
are gonna do what we have to do anyway!
As for young artist there is always more paths to success then what we think. Most of the
participants in television talent shows don't get very far anyway since it seems like they are only in
the limelight until the next season of the show. I don't think anybody really knows what to do at the
moment to reach success. There are no easy ways to reach out, but then again, have there ever been
any?
I just think it's different. The music business is always changing just like any business and I really
don't get why so many people are having a hard time coping with that? If people don't want to buy
CD's anymore, we can't force them – we have to think of some other means to live from our music.
There are many ways to reach out, it's hard for everybody but not impossible for anyone. I guess
you have to think in new colors though.
Last question: tell me all about your future plans!
For now we're just gonna try to do as many shows as possible! And of course, in one way or
another, we're always working on some new songs at the back of our head. However, that's not our
priority for the moment.
